{"id":10062,"date":"2021-07-05T08:28:59","date_gmt":"2021-07-05T08:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=10062"},"modified":"2021-07-05T08:44:53","modified_gmt":"2021-07-05T08:44:53","slug":"boats-grow-legs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=10062","title":{"rendered":"Boats grow legs"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Since the widespread dismissal from newsrooms of sub-editors, the very people who would have spotted and corrected any inaccuracies and\/or anomalies, many more hidden exclusives are being reported nowadays by our free and inaccurate press, provided one knows where to look and reads carefully.<\/p>\r\n<p>Last week, the Shropshire Star had a hidden exclusive buried deeply in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shropshirestar.com\/news\/health\/coronavirus-covid19\/2021\/07\/01\/warning-that-canal-work-will-hit-post-lockdown-tourist-trade\/\">piece<\/a> on towpath repairs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shropshire_Union_Canal\">Shropshire Union Canal<\/a> and local traders&#8217; fear of loss of footfall in my home town of <a href=\"https:\/\/discovermarketdrayton.co.uk\/\">Market Drayton<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_10082\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10082\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-10082\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/07\/Betton_Mill-600x462.jpg\" alt=\"Shropshire Union canal in Market Drayton\" width=\"600\" height=\"462\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10082\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Betton Mill on the Shropshire Union Canal in Market Drayton. Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/canalrivertrust.org.uk\/\">Canal &amp; River Trust<\/a>, which manages the waterway, is planning to close the towpath through Market Drayton for repairs lasting two months. This will also entail a loss of moorings during the works.<\/p>\r\n<p>The fact that is has chosen do these works in the ten weeks from July 5 to September 10 hasn&#8217;t gone down too well with the director of one local boatyard, who is quoted as intimating that the closure would be a hammer blow to the summer trade, preventing visitors from mooring in the town and visiting shops and restaurants.<\/p>\r\n<p>In a quotation in the report, she said the following:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>It is basically the full length of the canal that goes through the town. Boats that would normally moor up and walk round the town, they won&#8217;t be able to do that.<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><em>Boats that would normally moor up and walk around town?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>These two actions surely would be consecutive and not concurrent?<\/p>\r\n<p>When did boats evolve the means of locomotion to be able to <em>walk round the town<\/em>?<\/p>\r\n<p>Why have the national and international media not picked up the Star&#8217;s exclusive?
