{"id":10175,"date":"2021-07-23T11:49:24","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T11:49:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=10175"},"modified":"2021-07-23T11:53:29","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T11:53:29","slug":"press-gets-it-wrong-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=10175","title":{"rendered":"Press gets it wrong &#8211; again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If there&#8217;s one characteristic of the English Empire&#8217;s free and fearless press and the news media in general that&#8217;s immediately apparent to anyone with more than one brain cell, it&#8217;s their usually remote relationship with the truth.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the last week or so a new word has emerged &#8211; <em>pingdemic<\/em> &#8211; in relation to the coronavirus pandemic to describe the large volume of self-isolation warnings issued by the Covid track and trace app (<em>aka pings (pl.), as derived from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ping_(networking_utility)\">computer networking utility<\/a> of the same name. Ed.<\/em>).<\/p>\r\n<p>Thus the terms <em>ping<\/em> and <em>pingdemic<\/em> have become part of normal newspaper and news media vocabulary, as shown in this typical example from yesterday&#8217;s London Evening Standard.<\/p>\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/07\/standard_pingdemic.jpg\" alt=\"Headline reads Ping threat to our food, tube and bins\" width=\"492\" height=\"628\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/07\/standard_pingdemic.jpg 492w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/07\/standard_pingdemic-235x300.jpg 235w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 492px) 100vw, 492px\" \/>\r\n<p>Whoever wrote the headline <em>Ping threat to our food, tube and bins<\/em> has clearly not thought the matter through.<\/p>\r\n<p>It&#8217;s not the <em>pings<\/em> that are the threat but the viral plague which is giving rise to rocketing Covid, aided and abetted by an apology for a government that has removed restrictions far too soon and relinquished &#8211; in exemplary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Pontius-Pilate\">Pontius Pilate<\/a> mode &#8211; all responsibility for safeguarding people&#8217;s health in the rush to let all their rich mates resume making <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loadsamoney\">Loadsamoney<\/a> again.<\/p>\r\n<p>All news is to a certain extent manipulated, but if those that right it cannot even get the basic details correct in a headline, is it any wonder that there is deep mistrust in the media?<\/p>\r\n<p>Still, never mind with all this gloom and doom. Immediately adjacent is a prime example of <em>look over there<\/em> in the form of the current 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.<\/p><p>\r\nThe staff of the Standard clearly seem to have adopted the comment by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juvenal\">Juvenal<\/a>, the 2nd century Roman poet famous that the common people are only interested in bread and circuses (<em>Latin: panem et circensis.
