{"id":1040,"date":"2013-01-12T10:45:29","date_gmt":"2013-01-12T10:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=1040"},"modified":"2013-01-12T11:43:58","modified_gmt":"2013-01-12T11:43:58","slug":"greek-municipality-of-kalamaria-installs-libreoffice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=1040","title":{"rendered":"Greek municipality of Kalamari\u00e0 installs LibreOffice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/10\/LibreOffice.png\" alt=\"the LibreOffice logo\" width=\"128\" height=\"48\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-268\" \/><br \/>\nThe free and open source advocacy organisation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greeklug.gr\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=229%3Apressrelease-20130111-dimkal-libreoffice&amp;catid=1%3Aannouncementsnews&amp;Itemid=65&amp;lang=en\">GreekLUG reports<\/a> that the northern Greek Municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kalamaria\">Kalamari\u00e0<\/a> near Thessaloniki is in the process of installing the cross-platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice productivity suite<\/a> on all of the council&#8217;s 170 workstations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greeklug.gr\/images\/stories\/drastiriotites\/pressrelease-20130111-dim_kal-libreoffice-en.pdf\">press release<\/a> (PDF), some 120 installations have been done to date.<\/p>\n<p>It is believed that this move will save the council some &euro;38,000 in licensing fees (including VAT) compared with renewing and\/or buying new licences for MS Office. As the Greek public sector is extremely short of money (<em>and getting increasingly shorter thereof in many cases. Ed.<\/em>), to say the least, this is a very smart move.<\/p>\n<p>GreekLUG welcomes this move, which means that Kalamari\u00e0 now joins the pioneering municipalities of <a href=\"http:\/\/joinup.ec.europa.eu\/news\/gr-local-authorities-using-open-source-and-open-standards\">Heraklion in Crete<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/joinup.ec.europa.eu\/news\/greek-municipality-pilea-hortiatis-migrating-libreoffice\">Pilea-Hortiatis<\/a> in pioneering the use of free and open source software in the Greek public sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The free and open source advocacy organisation GreekLUG reports that the northern Greek Municipality of Kalamari\u00e0 near Thessaloniki is in the process of installing the cross-platform LibreOffice productivity suite on all of the council&#8217;s 170 workstations.
