{"id":10912,"date":"2022-02-15T11:05:41","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T11:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=10912"},"modified":"2022-02-16T11:13:37","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T11:13:37","slug":"toppled-road-renamed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=10912","title":{"rendered":"Toppled Road renamed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half a year ago, your &#8216;umble scribe reported that Colston Road in Easton, a road named after Bristol-born slave trader, insider share dealer, financier, religious bigot and former Tory MP for the city had been unofficially renamed as <em>Toppled Road<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=10412\"><em>posts passim<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\r\n<p>On the other side of the road from the crudely painted <em>Toppled Street<\/em> on the side of a house, a new more official-looking street name sign has appeared in recent days.<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_10920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10920\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2022\/02\/colston_4_road.jpg\" alt=\"Colston Four Road\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2022\/02\/colston_4_road.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2022\/02\/colston_4_road-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The original street name sign is painted out as a token of the regard in which Eddie the Slaver is held locally.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>The new unofficial sign commemorates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2022\/jan\/05\/four-cleared-of-toppling-edward-colston-statute\">acquittal by a Bristol jury<\/a> of the so-called <em>Colston Four<\/em> who were tried for criminal damage when Colston&#8217;s statue in the centre of the city was brought down and dumped in the city docks during the course of a Black Lives Matter protest on 7 June 2020.<\/p>\r\n<p>Local residents have been uneasy for years about living in a street named after a so-called <em>philanthropist<\/em> who made his money from kidnapping, trafficking and exploiting to death thousands of unwilling Africans and have long campaigned for it to be changed, along with other reminders of the late Victorian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brh.org.uk\/site\/articles\/myths-within-myths\/\">Cult of Colston<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Speaking to Easton <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.bristol.gov.uk\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=32636\">councillor Barry Parsons<\/a> yesterday, your correspondent asked him for an update on how the name change was progressing.<\/p>\r\n<p>He responded that the whole matter of street renamings was one of the topics handed over to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.gov.uk\/policies-plans-strategies\/we-are-bristol-history-commission\"> We Are Bristol History Commission<\/a>, which has just recently issued its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-bristol-60247092\">recommendations in respect of Colston&#8217;s statue<\/a>, backing the general public view it belongs henceforth in a museum.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, any words of wisdom from the Commission regarding the fate of Bristol&#8217;s street names commemorating Eddie the Slaver have yet to be uttered and it would appear the matter has been (so to say) <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/kick-sth-into-the-long-grass\">kicked into the long grass<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>In a final twist, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/bristolians-outraged-renaming-road-honour-6657565\">Bristol Post\/Bristol Live is claiming that some of its less perceptive readers are &#8220;<em>outraged<\/em>&#8220;<\/a> at the change of name, with some actually believing the new sign has been erected by the city&#8217;s perfidious council, even though the sign&#8217;s design is clearly different to that used by the local authority, whose standard modern street name signs all include the first 3 characters of the road&#8217;s postcode<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly half a year ago, your &#8216;umble scribe reported that Colston Road in Easton, a road named after Bristol-born slave trader, insider share dealer, financier, religious bigot and former Tory MP for the city had been unofficially renamed as Toppled Road (posts passim).
