{"id":11544,"date":"2022-08-24T13:35:51","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T13:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=11544"},"modified":"2022-08-24T13:35:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T13:35:51","slug":"bs5-bilingualism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=11544","title":{"rendered":"BS5 bilingualism"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Bristol is a city in which, according to the 2011 census data, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/opendata.bristol.gov.uk\/explore\/dataset\/language-list\/table\/\">90 languages are spoken<\/a>: no surprise for the UK&#8217;s tenth most populous city.<\/p>\r\n<p>Given its proximity to Wales &#8211; a mere train ride or short drive away over one of the two bridges spanning the M\u00f4r Hafren (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=10444\">aka the Severn Sea<\/a>. Ed.<\/em>), there&#8217;s always been more than a bit of friendly rivalry between the city and county and South Wwales, with a topping of mutual parochial condescension reserved for near neighbours.<\/p>\r\n<p>Given the diverse nature of east Bristol&#8217;s population, it&#8217;s not unusual to see shop signs in languages other than English, but the Tenovus Cancer Care charity shop in St Mark&#8217;s Road (<em>kindly note the apostrophe you prefer to ignore, Bristol City Council. Ed.<\/em>), has achieved what to your &#8216;umble scribe&#8217;s recollection a first for BS5: a Welsh\/English bilingual sign offering &#8211; on one side at least &#8211; a free health check.
