They have been depicted as such in European art for at least a millennium, although their origins stretch way back into history to the Bronze Age <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indus_Valley_Civilisation\">Indus Valley Civilisation<\/a> and the Middle East.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In a more recent context, the <em>sunlit uplands<\/em> first popularised in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/This_was_their_finest_hour\">Churchill&#8217;s &#8220;<em>This was their finest hour<\/em>&#8221; speech<\/a> in 1940 was dusted off by the Brexit zealots and Europhobes to denote the boundless possibilities which faced the country once it had extricated itself from the stranglehold of the alien and oppressive European Union.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Those on the Remain side of the argument eagerly populated these mythological mountain pastures with herds of unicorns to illustrate the delusions of the Brexiteers. Those who turned the unicorns loose on the sunlit uplands have since prove correct in the mockery: Brexit has been an absolute disaster with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/tv\/news\/dover-chaos-simon-calder-says-brexit-is-to-blame-for-massive-backlog-b2312517.html\">increased bureaucracy and delays<\/a> at the Channel ports, not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cer.eu\/insights\/cost-brexit-june-2022\">the 5% plus decline in <abbr title=\"Gross Domestic Product\">GDP<\/abbr><\/a>\r\n\r\n<\/p><p>Being built on what were the banks of Bristol&#8217;s tidal <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/River_Frome,_Bristol\">River Frome<\/a> (<em>long since culverted. Ed.<\/em>), the Galleries shopping centre could not in any way be classified as belonging to any uplands, sunlit or otherwise. Nevertheless, one empty shop unit on the top floor was populated by a whole herd of unicorns.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn1.jpg\" alt=\"A decorated plastic unicorn on a wheelboard\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>Had they migrated from those Phoebus-favoured hills? Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2023\/mar\/30\/116m-brexit-festival-saw-just-a-fraction-of-visitors-and-income-predicted\">the \u00a3116.8m cost to the taxpayer and low visitor numbers of the original<\/a>, was the city planning its very own Festival of Brexit?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The answer was staring your bemused correspondent in the face in one of the shop&#8217;s windows.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn2.jpg\" alt=\"Yet another tarted-up unicorn\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/unicorn2-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>It was another of those local sculpture trails (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=4386\"><em>posts passim<\/em><\/a>), this time featuring unicorns instead of gorillas or Gromits, ostensibly to celebrate the 650th anniversary of the Bristol gaining county status in 1373, presumably by the usual practice of the time of local worthies giving the reigning monarch a large amount of cash in return for a charter or, <a href=\"https:\/\/theunicornfest.co.uk\">as stated on the festival website<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>Unicornfest, part of the 650th anniversary celebrations for Bristol, seeks to unite the business and creative sectors, as well as local communities and schools across Bristol and the surrounding area, bringing art, colour and fun to the streets of the city this year.<\/blockquote>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unicorns are commonly described as horse-like creatures with a single large, pointed, spiralling horn projecting from their foreheads.
