{"id":12577,"date":"2023-04-18T13:24:11","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T13:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=12577"},"modified":"2023-04-18T13:34:09","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T13:34:09","slug":"bore-da-bannau-brycheiniog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=12577","title":{"rendered":"Bore Da, Bannau Brycheiniog!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/apr\/17\/brecon-beacons-relaunches-with-welsh-name-bannau-brycheiniog-as-picture-of-hope-for-future\">news was announced<\/a> that, following the recent decision by its fellow national park authority in North Wales, the one covering a large swathe of south Wales would henceforth be called the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in English.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>There was also a video to accompany the name change.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_81015\"  width=\"600\" height=\"338\"  data-origwidth=\"600\" data-origheight=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/m7fcRyIY3EQ?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"Bannau Brycheiniog: an old name for a new way to be\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>However, the change has not gone down well, particularly in the rabid right-wing monoglot English press, as shown by the image below from yesterday&#8217;s Daily Mail website.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_12599\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12599\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/daily_mail_bannau.png\" alt=\"Headline reads Now 'virtue-signalling' bosses at Brecon Beacons announce plans to drop national park's English name in favour of &amp;'eco-friendly' Welsh one promoted by actor-turned-activist Michael Sheen\" width=\"600\" height=\"778\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/daily_mail_bannau.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/daily_mail_bannau-231x300.png 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12599\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Snowflakes!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p>Not forgetting to add all their typical smears, they&#8217;re touchy souls at the Mail, aren&#8217;t they? Nevertheless, like all good Anglophone monoglots, they cannot even get the pronunciation of Bannau Brycheiniog right. In <em>Brycheiniog<\/em>, the <em>ch<\/em> is pronounced as in the Scottish <em>loch<\/em>, not like an English <em>ck<\/em> as written in the Mail.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Furthermore a &#8216;<em>columnist<\/em>&#8216; at The Independent also did not want to be excluded from being outraged and mocking the Welsh language, <a href=\"https:\/\/nation.cymru\/news\/columnist-melts-down-over-bannau-brycheiniog-change-and-compares-brychan-to-boris-johnson\/\">as Nation Cymru reports<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Nor has the change met with universal approval in Wales itself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>To being with, Reach plc&#8217;s Cardiff-based Wales Online title adopted a provocative stance with its headline at the top of yesterday&#8217;s home page (<em>clickbait for a largely monoglot Anglophone readership not known for voicing its support for either Cymraeg or <a href=\"https:\/\/cymdeithas.cymru\/what-is-cymdeithas-yr-iaith\">Cymdeithas yr Iaith<\/a>? Ed.<\/em>).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/wales_online_bannau.png\" alt=\"Headline reads Welsh national park changes its nonsense name\" width=\"600\" height=\"404\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/wales_online_bannau.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/wales_online_bannau-300x202.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>However, the all-Wales whinging trophy has to go to the Welsh Conservatives, those faithful servants of their colonial masters in London SW1, with the charge being headed by their Senedd and Welsh &#8216;<em>leader<\/em>&#8216;, one Andrew RT Davies, who planted the Welsh Tories firmly in the Anglophone camp.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_gwirion.png\" alt=\"Tweet reads: It\u2019s just a hunch, but I sense the Welsh people won\u2019t think renaming the Brecon Beacons should be a priority. The Beacons are as recognisable outside of Wales as they are here. Why undermine that?\" width=\"581\" height=\"272\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_gwirion.png 581w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_gwirion-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>This earned him plenty of derision, particularly from his fellow Welsh, of which the following is typical.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_reply.png\" alt=\"Tweet reads Why do you hate Welsh people having our own language and identity?\" width=\"581\" height=\"101\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_reply.png 581w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/04\/davies_reply-300x52.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>If Mr Davies doesn&#8217;t like his compatriots using their own language and celebrating their own heritage (the hills were known as the <em>Bannau Brycheiniog<\/em> long before the monoglots arrived in force), perhaps he ought to relinquish his seat in the Senedd Cymru and find a nice safe Tory constituency in the English Conservative heartlands.<\/p>\r\n\r\nI for one shall look forward to visiting the <em>Bannau Brycheiniog<\/em> and <em>Eryri<\/em> (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=12109\">the national park formerly known as Snowdonia<\/a>.
