{"id":1294,"date":"2013-02-24T15:05:15","date_gmt":"2013-02-24T15:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=1294"},"modified":"2013-02-24T15:05:15","modified_gmt":"2013-02-24T15:05:15","slug":"orr-fails-open-standards-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=1294","title":{"rendered":"ORR fails open standards test"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a regular rail user, I sometimes use real-time train information and was intrigued to learn that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rail-reg.gov.uk\/\">Office of Rail Regulation<\/a> is currently holding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rail-reg.gov.uk\/server\/show\/ConWebDoc.11063\">consultation on real-time train information<\/a> until 28th February.<\/p>\n<p>However, the ORR is clearly confused as to what open standards (<em>such as web standards. Ed.<\/em>) really are, as shown by the following sentence from the consultation page:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>So that we are able to apply web standards to content on our website, we would prefer that you email us your response in Microsoft Word format.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Firstly, MS Office formats are closed, proprietary formats, unlike the Open Document  Format (ODF) used by more sensible office suites.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, does the above statement imply that the ORR uses MS Word to edit its web content? MS Word has a hard time behaving like a word processor. \ud83d\ude42 When used for HTML it produces some of the sloppiest mark-up known.
