{"id":13398,"date":"2023-12-06T14:37:46","date_gmt":"2023-12-06T14:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=13398"},"modified":"2023-12-06T14:37:46","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T14:37:46","slug":"steam-returns-to-lwh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=13398","title":{"rendered":"Steam returns to LWH"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalrail.co.uk\/stations\/lawrence-hill\/\">Lawrence Hill station (LWH)<\/a>, the first\/last stop into and out of Bristol Temple Meads on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Severn_Beach_Line\">Severn Beach line<\/a>, has been serving the travelling public since 8 September 1863 when services began on the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway to New Passage Pier north of the city on the banks of the River estuary.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>For most of that time, services would have been hauled by steam locomotive, so there was more than a whiff of coal smoke, steam and nostalgia when your &#8216;umble scribe alighted from the bus to see a steam-hauled special complete with rolling stock in British Railways brown and cream livery pull up at platform 1.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_13412\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13412\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge0.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge0-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Earl of Mount Edgcumbe steam locomotive at LWH<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p>The train had been reversed up the line &#8211; note the rear red lamp on the front of the locomotive &#8211; so that the steam locomotive &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GWR_4073_Class_5043_Earl_of_Mount_Edgcumbe\">Earl of Mount Edgcumbe<\/a> &#8211; could be turned around to haul the coaches back into Temple Meads one mile away.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_13413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13413\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"793\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2023\/12\/600px_edge1-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The locomotive starts to haul the carriages back towards Temple Meads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p>Eagle-eyed readers will note that the front of the locomotive in the second photo is showing a white light, not its previous red lamp.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lawrence Hill station (LWH), the first\/last stop into and out of Bristol Temple Meads on the Severn Beach line, has been serving the travelling public since 8 September 1863 when services began on the Bristol and South Wales Union Railway to New Passage Pier north of the city on the banks of the River estuary.
