{"id":13698,"date":"2024-02-25T12:38:08","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T12:38:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=13698"},"modified":"2024-02-26T09:05:46","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T09:05:46","slug":"commemorative-carcassone-cuisine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=13698","title":{"rendered":"Commemorative Carcassonne culinary cock-up"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13713\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/1_carcassonne_aerial_2016.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of medieval Carcassonne\" width=\"320\" height=\"189\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/1_carcassonne_aerial_2016.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/1_carcassonne_aerial_2016-300x177.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/>The French city of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carcassonne\">Carcassonne<\/a> in the <em>d\u00e9partement<\/em> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aude\">Aude<\/a> is best known &#8211; and rightly so &#8211; for its medieval citadel, which actually has a history dating back to the Gallo-Roman period and is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/\">UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, in recent days Carcassonne has become equally well known &#8211; in the Francophone world at least &#8211; for the poor quality of the local council&#8217;s spelling and its subsequent mockery on social media and in the mainstream print and broadcast media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midilibre.fr\/2024\/02\/25\/avenue-pierre-curry-carcassonne-rebaptise-le-physicien-pierre-curie-pour-le-plus-grand-bonheur-des-reseaux-sociaux-11787086.php\">as Midi Libre reports<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Like any French town or city, some of Carcassonne&#8217;s street names commemorate prominent local and\/or national figures.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13716\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/Pierrecurie-e1708868226906.jpg\" alt=\"Pierre Curie. Image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons\" width=\"150\" height=\"206\" \/>One of those luminaries so honoured in Carcassonne is the physicist Pierre Curie (1859-1906) In 1903, Pierre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics along with his wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marie_Curie\">Marie Sk\u0142odowska\u2013Curie<\/a> and another French scientist, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henri_Becquerel\">Henri Becquerel<\/a>, the man who discovered radioactity, all of them being jointly honoured in that year for their contributions to science and knowledge.<\/p>\r\n<p>As stated by Midi Libre, the cause for the outbreak of mainstream media and social media mockery, not to mention the presence of red faces at the local <em>mairie<\/em>, can be summarised in one single sentence.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>Cette semaine, deux panneaux ont \u00e9t\u00e9 install\u00e9s sur l&#8217;avenue Pierre Curie, dans la cit\u00e9 audoise, sauf que le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre physicien a \u00e9t\u00e9 rebaptis\u00e9&#8230; &#8220;Pierre Curry&#8221; et a donc \u00e9t\u00e9 orthographi\u00e9 comme la c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00e9pice indienne.<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Which is rendered in English as the following:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>This week, two road signs were installed on Avenue Pierre Curie, in the city in Aude, except that the famous physicist was renamed&#8230; &#8220;Pierre Curry&#8221; and was thus spelled like the famous Indian spice.<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13712\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/curry-e1708860570799.png\" alt=\"Street sign for Avenue Pierre Curry\" width=\"447\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/curry-e1708860570799.png 447w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/02\/curry-e1708860570799-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 447px) 100vw, 447px\" \/> <\/p>\r\n<p>The erroneous signs were quickly removed yesterday (Saturday). The council has stated that signs with the correct spelling will be installed from this coming Monday.<\/p>\r\n<p>The mockery on social media took two forms: firstly, the culinary (<em>it is not known whether Pierre and Marie invented the radioactive tandoori.
