{"id":13785,"date":"2024-03-06T17:11:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T17:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=13785"},"modified":"2024-03-06T17:33:16","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T17:33:16","slug":"donelan-does-a-libel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=13785","title":{"rendered":"Michelle Donelan does a libel"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/03\/Michelle_Donela.jpg\" alt=\"Official mugshot of libellous minister Michelle Donelan\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13800\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/michelle-donelan-libel-damages-academic-b2507757.html\">News has come to light today<\/a> that Michelle Donelan, the dishonourable member for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chippenham_(UK_Parliament_constituency)\">Chippenham<\/a>, currently doing a nice sideline in incompetence as the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, has retracted libellous allegations made in October 2023 against Professor Kate Sang of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh \u2013 an academic recently appointed to a <abbr title=\"UK Research and Innovation\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/\">UKRI<\/a><\/abbr> advisory group \u2013 accusing Prof. Sang of expressing sympathy for proscribed terrorist organisation Hamas. Donelan also made similar defamatory allegations about another academic, Dr Kamna Patel of University College London.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Donelan has now withdrawn her allegations and apologised for the remarks she initially made via social media, as well as agreeing to pay Prof. Sang undisclosed damages and legal cost have been funded by the taxpayer, in the same manner disgraced former party-time Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson had his legal fees funded by the public purse when he was finally pulled up after constantly lying to the House of Commons.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The use of public funds to redress the damage done by a government minister&#8217;s private bigotry has not gone down well in some circles, to put it mildly. Those objecting include the Liberal Democrats&#8217; deputy leader <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daisy_Cooper\">Daisy Cooper<\/a>, who has has referred to the largesse of the public purse in relieving Donelan&#8217;s financial embarrassment as <em>nothing short of a national scandal<\/em> as her actions were clearly outside of her ministerial brief.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>However, not all the media presented the audiences with the full facts. Here the BBC has Donelan forking out herself for the damages and legal costs. It was not alone in doing so, with The Guardian, Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph all implying Donelan is paying the agreed sum out of her own pocket.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/03\/donelan_bbc.png\" alt=\"Headline reads Cabinet minister pays damages over Hamas claim\" width=\"440\" height=\"523\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13806\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/03\/donelan_bbc.png 440w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/03\/donelan_bbc-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelle_Donelan\">Wikipedia helpfully mentions<\/a> in its article on the minister that before entering politics, Donelan&#8217;s career was in marketing, meaning that she has previous form in peddling stuff that is patently untrue or closely related thereto (<em>along with advertising, public relations and broadcasting, marketing is one of the so-called <strong>bullshit industries<\/strong>. Ed.<\/em>).<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/news\/world\/mp-michelle-donelan-faces-calls-to-resign-for-using-taxpayer-cash-in-libel-case\/ar-BB1jpjZe\">Calls are now being made<\/a> for her resignation, but as per usual an anonymous Number 10 source has stated that Rishi Sunak had full confidence in Donelan, calling her \u201c<em>an excellent minister<\/em>\u201d.
