{"id":14397,"date":"2024-08-01T12:27:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-01T12:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=14397"},"modified":"2024-08-02T08:44:19","modified_gmt":"2024-08-02T08:44:19","slug":"the-continuing-menace-of-driverless-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=14397","title":{"rendered":"The continuing menace of driverless vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>All over the country, every day driverless vehicles are colliding with other vehicles and\/or structures according to the local press.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/live-trains-stopped-between-bristol-9451746\">Here&#8217;s a typical example from today&#8217;s Bristol Live\/Post<\/a> to accompany the screenshot below.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/08\/post_railway_bridge.png\" alt=\"Headline - Live: Trains stopped between Bristol and Bath after vehicle crashes into bridge\" width=\"600\" height=\"504\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/08\/post_railway_bridge.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2024\/08\/post_railway_bridge-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<p>Nowhere in the entire report is there any mention of a driver, i.e. someone who might have been able to avoid the vehicle in question deciding to crash into the railway bridge of its own volition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Furthermore, the byline shows that someone is unfamiliar with basic English language. It reads:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>Services are at a stand.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<p>The byline is in fact quoted from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/INRIX\">Inrix<\/a>, a US-based traffic data company which now operates in the Untied Kingdom, but seems to be unfamiliar with the word <em>standstill<\/em>. If any illiterate Inrix employees happen to be passing, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/standstill\">defined<\/a> as <em>a condition in which all movement or activity has stopped<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<\/p><p>The phrase <em>at a stand<\/em> does exist, but its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourdictionary.com\/at-a-stand\">meaning<\/a> &#8211; <em>in a state of confusion or uncertainty; undecided what to do next<\/em> &#8211; is subtly different from <em>standstill<\/em>.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>All over the country, every day driverless vehicles are colliding with other vehicles and\/or structures according to the local press.
