You too can write for the Post!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To paraphrase the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daily_Express#History\">Duke of Edinburgh&#8217;s famous retort from 1962<\/a>, the Bristol Post is a bloody awful newspaper. Every day it manages to show its ignorance of the districts of Bristol, greengrocer&#8217;s apostrophes are not unknown and the command of terminology shown by its journalists is abysmal.<\/p>\n<p>As regards the latter, there was a prime example in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisbristol.co.uk\/Huge-jump-number-cannabis-farms-Bristol-area\/story-18468587-detail\/story.html\">this article about cannabis farms<\/a>, as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gardeners often appear in court with a translator and cases regularly detail how electricity at the grow houses is bypassed from the mains.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In court with a translator? My heart sank. The writer has clearly not been following this blog or other sources about the <em>interpreting<\/em> fiasco in the English courts (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=1423\" title=\"Capita now using criminals as court interpreters\">posts passim<\/a><\/em>). Moreover, he has clearly never read <a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=56\" title=\"\ufeffContemporary BBC English: \u201c\u2026 speaking through a translator\u201d\">my early post on the BBC&#8217;s never-ending confusion of interpreters with translators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the benefit of passing Post journalists, I shall once again quote from that article about the difference between the two:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> &#8230;here\u2019s a brief explanation of the difference between interpreting and translation: <em><strong>interpreting<\/strong><\/em> deals with the <em><strong>spoken word<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>translation<\/strong><\/em> with the <em><strong>written word<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simple isn&#8217;t it?
