{"id":153,"date":"2012-09-18T13:57:14","date_gmt":"2012-09-18T13:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=153"},"modified":"2012-10-14T11:08:01","modified_gmt":"2012-10-14T11:08:01","slug":"myths-about-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=153","title":{"rendered":"Myths about translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/\">Huffington Post<\/a>, Nathaly Kelly has been dispelling some translation myths in a piece entitled &#8220;Clearing up the Top 10 Myths About Translation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 myths as are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Translation is a small, niche market;<\/li>\n<li>There is a declining need for translation;<\/li>\n<li>Most translators translate books; most interpreters work at the United Nations;<\/li>\n<li>Any bilingual person can be a translator or an interpreter;<\/li>\n<li>Translators and interpreters do the same thing (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=56\" title=\"\ufeffContemporary BBC English: \u201c\u2026 speaking through a translator\u201d\">posts passim<\/a><\/em>);<\/li>\n<li>Translators and interpreters work in more than two languages;<\/li>\n<li>Translation only matters to &#8220;language people&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>Crowdsourcing puts professional translators out of work;<\/li>\n<li>Machine translation is crushing the demand for human translation; and<\/li>\n<li>All translation will someday be free.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It would be easy to go through each of the above points and comment. However, I would simply make one small remark regarding item 9: I&#8217;m so glad machine translation is so bad and likely to remain so for quite some time.
