Tell the W3C no thanks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/Consortium\/\">According to its website<\/a>, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where its member organisations, a full-time staff and the public work together to develop web standards, whose mission is to lead the Web to its full potential.<\/p>\n<p>These standards have so far been characterised by complete openness: all web standards are open standards.<\/p>\n<p>However, these open standards are now under attack.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a proposal currently before the W3C&#8217;s HTML5 Working Group to build <acronym title=\"Digital Rights Management\">DRM<\/acronym> (<em>aka Digital Restrictions Management by openistas. Ed.<\/em>) into the next generation of core web standards. The proposal is called <a href=\"https:\/\/dvcs.w3.org\/hg\/html-media\/raw-file\/tip\/encrypted-media\/encrypted-media.html\">Encrypted Media Extensions<\/a> or EME.<\/p>\n<p>The people behind EME are the major media companies; having failed to push such illiberal measures as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/2012\/01\/sopa-pipa-the-evil-twins\/\" title=\"SOPA &amp; PIPA \u2013 the evil twins?\"><acronym title=\"the Stop Online Piracy Act\">SOPA<\/acronym> and <acronym title=\"the Protect IP Act\">PIPA<\/acronym><\/a> through the US legislature, the Big Media moguls are now going through non-governmental channels to try to sneak digital restrictions into every interaction people have online.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7074\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/hollyweb.jpeg\" alt=\"image with caption Stop DRM in HTML5\" width=\"500\" height=\"546\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7074\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hollyweb? No thanks, W3C!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Netflix, Google, Microsoft and the BBC are all rallying behind this ludicrous proposal, which &#8211; as stated above &#8211; flies in the face of the W3C&#8217;s mission.<\/p>\n<p>However, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defectivebydesign.org\/no-drm-in-html5\">petition<\/a> has already been set up to oppose the addition of DRM to HTML5 and 3rd May 2013 has been designated the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.defectivebydesign.org\/dayagainstdrm\">International Day Against DRM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defectivebydesign.org\/no-drm-in-html5\/fr\">The petition page is also available in French<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d urge everyone interested in open standards and all other forms of openness &#8211; such as open data and open source &#8211; to sign the petition; I&#8217;ve already done so.<\/p>\n<p>This article is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/2013\/04\/hollyweb-tell-the-w3c-no-thanks\/\">reposted with some minor amendments from Bristol Wireless<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to its website, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where its member organisations, a full-time staff and the public work together to develop web standards, whose mission is to lead the Web to its full potential.
