{"id":15918,"date":"2025-09-30T09:46:04","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T09:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=15918"},"modified":"2025-09-30T10:18:46","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T10:18:46","slug":"mural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=15918","title":{"rendered":"Mural?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/centre-bristol-transformed-huge-new-10536140\">Bristol Post reports<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>A huge new floor mural celebrating Bristol\u2019s \u2018past, present and future\u2019 has been unveiled in The Centre as the focus for the area that previously had fountains on it.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<p>This new artwork, produced by the artist Oshii and a team of fellow artists put together by the Bedminster urban art festival organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upfest.co.uk\/\">UpFest<\/a>, is absolutely stunning and covers an area more than 700m<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_15930\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15930\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2025\/09\/centre_art.jpg\" alt=\"New artwork in Bristol city centre\" width=\"600\" height=\"305\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2025\/09\/centre_art.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2025\/09\/centre_art-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-15930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of Our Common Ground<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p><em>But is it mural?<\/em> asks the wordsmith who resides inside your &#8216;umble scribe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>The answer is a definite <em>no<\/em> in the strictest sense. The Tate, somewhat of an authority in the art world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/art\/art-terms\/m\/mural\">defines<\/a> a mural as follows:<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>A mural is a painting applied directly to a wall usually in a public space.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<p>Bristol&#8217;s latest public artwork is executed in paint and is in a public space, but it&#8217;s on the ground, not a wall or ceiling, so is not strictly a mural in the accepted sense of the word, hence the less than accurate <em>floor mural<\/em> devised by the Post.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>It&#8217;s not a mosaic, one of the only forms of decorative artwork applied to a flat horizontal surface as no tiles (<em>also known as tesserae.
