{"id":16642,"date":"2026-03-06T12:46:31","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T12:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=16642"},"modified":"2026-03-07T14:23:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-07T14:23:45","slug":"exclusive-wiltshire-man-murdered-on-social-media-server","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=16642","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: Wiltshire man murdered on social media server"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/ambiguity\">One definition<\/a> of the noun <em>ambiguity<\/em> in English is &#8220;<em>a word or expression that can be understood in two or more possible ways<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Nearly 5 decades ago, when your &#8216;umble scribe started his first job as a staff translator for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imperial_Brands\">Imperial Tobacco<\/a> and was being schooled in how to write in the company&#8217;s internal house style, one definite rule that was imposed was that of avoiding any and all ambiguity.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>This is a practice that does not seem to be prevalent in titles in the current <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reach_plc\">Reach plc<\/a> newspaper stable, including Bristol &#8216;Live&#8217;, the conglomerate&#8217;s newspaper of (warped) record for the greater Bristol area.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>And so it came to pass that in the process of trawling social media for something that qualifies as investigative &#8216;journalism&#8217;, the Post looked further afield than the BS postcode and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/i-found-out-boy-been-10848877\">ventured into the the wilds of Wiltshire<\/a> for a story.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2026\/03\/facebook.png\" alt=\"Headline - I found out my boy had been stabbed to death on Facebook\" width=\"437\" height=\"521\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2026\/03\/facebook.png 437w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2026\/03\/facebook-252x300.png 252w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/>\r\n\r\n<br \/>\r\n\r\n<p>Yes, that&#8217;s right! If one just read the headline, the impression is given that the murder victim was killed on a server in the employ of Mark Zuckerberg. However, in the actual body of the report, the copy does state that no killing occurred on Facebook itself.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<blockquote>The mum of a murdered teen found out about the killing on Facebook before receiving a phone call asking if it was true.<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n<p>How the headline and the copy body can portray two different versions what transpired seems to have by-passed its two named authors and the <a href=\"https:\/\/swns.com\/\">SWNS news agency<\/a> credited as being responsible for writing the piece is beyond belief. In the old days, this would have been picked up and remedied by a sub-editor (<em>before Reach made them all redundant. Ed.<\/em>).
