{"id":1980,"date":"2013-06-11T11:07:15","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T11:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=1980"},"modified":"2013-06-11T12:00:35","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T12:00:35","slug":"barncamp-my-highs-and-lows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=1980","title":{"rendered":"Barncamp &#8211; my highs and lows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Late yesterday afternoon I returned from <a href=\"https:\/\/barncamp.org.uk\/\">Barncamp<\/a> 2013, \u2013 a weekend of &#8220;hacktivism, workshops, entertainment, politics and fun in the sun&#8221; held at Highbury Farm up the beautiful Wye Valley a few miles south of Monmouth. Barncamp itself was open to attendees from Friday 7th June to Sunday 9th June. As part of the production crew, I got to spend a couple of additional nights on site, wearing out the view. Barncamp is a joint production between <a href=\"http:\/\/hacktionlab.org\/\">HacktionLab<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/flossmanuals.net\/\">FLOSS Manuals<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/\">Bristol Wireless<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1984\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/barncamp-site.jpg\" alt=\"The view up the Wye to Monmouth from the Barncamp site\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/barncamp-site.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/barncamp-site-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view up the Wye to Monmouth from the Barncamp site<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>My highs and lows of the event are listed below.<\/p>\n<h3>The highs<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Seeing the International Space Station (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=1806\" title=\"ISS migrates to Linux\">posts passim<\/a><\/em>) pass overhead on the first evening.<\/li>\n<li>Ben Green&#8217;s wild food walk &#8211; something I&#8217;d been promising myself to do for years. I ate wild garlic flowers for the first time while on Ben&#8217;s walk.<\/li>\n<li>Not reading the online edition (or any other format) of the dreadful Bristol Post.<\/li>\n<li>A fine pub lunch &#8211; steak and ale pie -at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lambflag.co.uk\/\">Lamb &amp; Flag<\/a> after my visit to <acronym title=\"Accident and Emergency\">A&amp;E<\/acronym> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abergavenny\">Abergavenny<\/a> (see below).<\/li>\n<li>Leading the Linux <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Command_line\">command line<\/a> workshop on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/event-ict\/\">Bristol Wireless mobile LTSP suite<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Seeing lots of people I haven&#8217;t seen since the last Barncamp, 2 years ago.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Wow!&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/charlieharvey.org.uk\/\">Charlie<\/a>&#8216;s one word tasting note for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laphroaig.com\/\">Laphroaig<\/a> single malt whisky.<\/li>\n<li>Getting a surprised reaction from some for annointing the campfire hearth with Laphroaig before lighting (<em>humour an old hippy as he appeases the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genius_loci\">genus loci<\/a>, will you? Thanks. Ed.<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>Excellent beers all weekend (apart from the solitary pint of Nutcracker over at The Boat in Penallt).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The lows<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Getting knackered walking up and down the hill from the camping field to the barn and up and down to the village shop.<\/li>\n<li>Not catching sight of the ravens I heard all the week.<\/li>\n<li>Hitting myself on the left thumb with a lump hammer, requiring a trip to Neville Hall Hospital in Abergavenny and the insertion of 3 stiches (picture below).<\/li>\n<li>Having to come back to Bristol and routine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1983\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1983\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/ouch.jpg\" alt=\"Ouch!\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/ouch.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2013\/06\/ouch-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1983\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ouch!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>And finally&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>A big thank you to the folks at Highbury Farm, our hosts for Barncamp, especially Tez for the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comfrey\">comfrey<\/a> to help with my war wounds.
