Picture courtesy of Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_2233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2233\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2013\/07\/Falco_peregrinus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2013\/07\/Falco_peregrinus-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"peregrine falcon image\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-2233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peregrine falcon<\/figcaption><\/figure>Following the sound, I spotted the peregrine perched on a ledge near the top of the old Bristol Tramways power station, the building whose end is covered in scaffolding in the picture.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen peregrines before near Bristol, particularly down the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avon_Gorge\">Avon Gorge<\/a>, where I&#8217;ve spotted them nesting in the Gorge&#8217;s old quarries, but never before in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, I was quite excited by this and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wood5y\/status\/352438881435656193\">asked Bristol&#8217;s Twitter<\/a> users how unusual this was. After a couple of hours, I received a reply from naturalist and broadcaster <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eddrewitt.co.uk\/\">Ed Drewitt<\/a>, who informed me there was a &#8220;family of 3 chicks around Cabot Circus way&#8221; (<em>they might help keep the city centre&#8217;s gull and feral pigeon population under control. Ed.<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Around my home patch of Easton I have over the years seen both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/wildlife\/birdguide\/name\/s\/sparrowhawk\/index.aspx\">sparrowhawks<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/wildlife\/birdguide\/name\/k\/kestrel\/index.aspx\">kestrels<\/a>, whilst moving further afield the patchwork of open grassland and woodland on Purdown and Stoke Park is ideal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/wildlife\/birdguide\/name\/b\/buzzard\/index.aspx\">buzzard<\/a> territory.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there&#8217;s one bird of prey I believe I&#8217;d heard that I&#8217;d really love someone else to corroborate. Returning home some years ago, I could have sworn I heard a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/wildlife\/birdguide\/name\/t\/tawnyowl\/index.aspx\">tawny owl<\/a> hooting in the vicinity of the railway embankment between <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stapleton_Road_railway_station\">Stapleton Road<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_Hill_railway_station\">Lawrence Hill<\/a> railway stations.
