{"id":4107,"date":"2014-05-11T07:22:40","date_gmt":"2014-05-11T07:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=4107"},"modified":"2014-05-12T11:41:45","modified_gmt":"2014-05-12T11:41:45","slug":"the-rustication-of-clifton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=4107","title":{"rendered":"The rustication of Clifton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier today, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\">news section of the Bristol Post<\/a> transported the city&#8217;s affluent district of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clifton,_Bristol\">Clifton<\/a> to the countryside, describing it as &#8216;rural&#8217;, as shown in the following screenshot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2014\/05\/rural_clifton.png\" alt=\"screenshot of Post website showing dodgy wording\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4108\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2014\/05\/rural_clifton.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2014\/05\/rural_clifton-300x198.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the Oxford English Dictionary rural has many <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oed.com\/view\/Entry\/168989;jsessionid=67B2C07F9978E43665E47705DD0604DF?redirectedFrom=rural#eid\">meanings<\/a>; the one implied by the Post&#8217;s usage is the OED&#8217;s definition 1c:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Employed or stationed in country districts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Are the people of Clifton yokels?<\/p>\n<p>Bristol absorbed Clifton in the 19th century, so any green wellies seen will be very clean and not covered in cow&#8217;s muck; they&#8217;ll be worn for fashion not for necessity. Although Clifton&#8217;s renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clifton_Down\">Downs<\/a> are still common land, the locals don&#8217;t seem to graze much livestock upon them. Nevertheless, some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/Sex-litter-cleared-Clifton-Downs\/story-18710166-detail\/story.html\">activities which may be regarded as animal<\/a> take place up there.<\/p>\n<p>The word rural has since been removed from the headline.<\/p>\n<p>I always believed press articles supposed to be sub-edited before being posted.
