One of these is the city&#8217;s tallest building: how many others can boast their tallest edifice dates back to the 12th century? Well, complete with its spire (built 1442), <a href=\"http:\/\/stmaryredcliffe.co.uk\/\">St Mary Redcliffe church<\/a> &#8211; the one the tourists mistake for Bristol Cathedral and the selfsame one described by Queen Elizabeth I as &#8220;<em>the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; still towers over every other building in the city at 89 metres (<em>or 292 ft if you still work in old money. Ed.<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Every now and again, some work needs to be done on the building&#8217;s fabric and I was extremely fortunate on Wednesday to spot some in progress way above my head.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-463\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/10\/stmaryredcliffe.jpg\" alt=\"image of spire of St Mary Redcliffe complete with steeplejacks\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" class=\"size-full wp-image-463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2012\/10\/stmaryredcliffe.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2012\/10\/stmaryredcliffe-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bristol&#8217;s tallest building complete with human ants<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nIf you squint up the spire, you can see two steeplejacks at work, with the lower one actually carrying a ladder.<\/p>\n<p>The steeplejacks are from the family firm of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dawsonsteeplejacks.co.uk\/\">Dawson Steeplejacks<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clutton,_Somerset\">Clutton<\/a> in North Somerset. To coincide with the works <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisbristol.co.uk\/Generations-Dawsons-real-head-heights\/story-17174668-detail\/story.html\">the Bristol Post carried a feature<\/a> on the 175 years-old firm and its work.
