{"id":4664,"date":"2014-08-17T09:27:41","date_gmt":"2014-08-17T09:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=4664"},"modified":"2014-08-17T09:40:36","modified_gmt":"2014-08-17T09:40:36","slug":"west-country-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=4664","title":{"rendered":"West Country confusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westerndailypress.co.uk\/\">Western Daily Press<\/a> is a stablemate of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/\">Bristol Post<\/a> and seems to share many of the latter&#8217;s afflictions &#8211; the same ugly <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brutalism\">Brutalist<\/a> building on Bristol&#8217;s Temple Way, poor English, dodgy photo captions and the like.<\/p>\n<p>It was therefore no surprise to encounter a prime example of confused reporting this morning, as illustrated by the screenshot below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2014\/08\/wdp_confusion.png\" alt=\"screensot of garbled article from Western Daily Press\" width=\"600\" height=\"181\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2014\/08\/wdp_confusion.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2014\/08\/wdp_confusion-300x90.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If one examines the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westerndailypress.co.uk\/Salmonella-outbreak-causes-deaths\/story-22754767-detail\/story.html\">article<\/a> to which the news page above relates, three disparate elements seem to have been combined by reporter Geoff Bennett (<em>who also writes for the Bristol Post. Ed.<\/em>) and his associates, i.e.:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a headline referring to widespread outbreaks of salmonella food poisoning in hospitals in England;<\/li>\n<li>a cuddly kittens picture and apposite caption; and<\/li>\n<li>a report on the court case of the alleged groping barber (<em>who was cleared by the court. Ed.<\/em>) which gave rise to Friday&#8217;s sexist Bristol Post front page (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=4655\" title=\"Bristol Post Balls \u2013 bad punning and sexism\">posts passim<\/a><\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is nothing like good, unambiguous reporting of the news &#8211; and the Western Daily Press is capable of nothing like it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Western Daily Press is a stablemate of the Bristol Post and seems to share many of the latter&#8217;s afflictions &#8211; the same ugly Brutalist building on Bristol&#8217;s Temple Way, poor English, dodgy photo captions and the like.
