{"id":5366,"date":"2015-01-11T17:08:22","date_gmt":"2015-01-11T17:08:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=5366"},"modified":"2015-01-11T17:19:54","modified_gmt":"2015-01-11T17:19:54","slug":"vous-netes-pas-charlie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=5366","title":{"rendered":"Vous n&#8217;\u00eates pas Charlie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/live\/2015\/jan\/11\/1m-expected-for-anti-terror-rally-live\">anti-terror rally<\/a> is being held in Paris in memory of those killed at the offices of Charlie Hebdo (<a href=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=5336\" title=\"Je suis Charlie\"><em>posts passim<\/em><\/a>) and at a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/video\/2015\/jan\/09\/french-police-storm-kosher-supermarket-video\">Kosher supermarket<\/a> in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>It is said that up to 1.5 mn. people are attending the rally.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst the attendees are many politicians, led by President Hollande. Many foreign politicians are also attending. <\/p>\n<p>Charlie Hebdo was a beacon of free speech and freedom of the press. Several of the foreign politicians in attendance represent regimes whose treatment of the press is less than enlightened. They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>King Abdullah of Jordan, which last year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/Diplomacy-and-Politics\/Jordanian-Palestinian-who-writes-for-Post-sentenced-in-Jordan-to-life-with-hard-labor-341596\">sentenced a Palestinian journalist to 15 years in prison with hard labour<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Turkey&#8217;s Prime Minister Mr Davutoglu. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/greenslade\/2013\/dec\/18\/journalist-safety-turkey\">Turkey imprisons more journalists than any other state<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/press-freedom-barometer-journalists-killed.html?annee=2014\">whose armed forces killed 7 journalists in Gaza in 2014<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Egypt&#8217;s Prime Minister Mr Shoukry. Egypt has not just jailed Al Jazeera journalists (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-30647732\">now facing a retrail<\/a>), but has also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailynewsegypt.com\/2014\/12\/20\/photojournalist-shawkan-describes-endless-nightmare-behind-bars\/\">detained photojournalist Shawkan for more than 500 days<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia, which last year <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/russie-journalist-arrested-after-17-09-2014,46974.html\">jailed a journalist for &#8220;<em>insulting a government servant<\/em>&#8220;<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra of Algeria, which has so far <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/algerie-journalist-held-without-trial-in-17-11-2014,47235.html\">detained journalist Abdessami Abdelhai for 15 months<\/a> without charge;<\/li>\n<li>Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, which in 2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2013\/08\/uae-authorities-release-egyptian-journalist-after.php\">held an Egyptian journalist incommunicado<\/a> for a month on suspicion of links with the Moslem Brotherhood;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Jomaa of Tunisia, which recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/news\/tunisia-blogger-jailed-military-court-should-be-released-2015-01-06\">jailed blogger Yassine Ayan for 3 years<\/a> for &#8220;<em>defaming the army<\/em>&#8220;;<\/li>\n<li>Messrs Irakli Garibashvili and Boiko Borisov, the Prime Ministers of Georgia and Bulgaria respectively. Both <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/bulgarie-police-attack-journalists-covering-26-07-2013,44980.html\">Bulgaria<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/georgie-at-least-a-dozen-journalists-27-05-2011,40365.html\">Georgia<\/a> have past form for  attacking and beating up journalists;<\/li>\n<li>Eric H. Holder, the Attorney General of the United States. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2014\/08\/13\/washington-post-reporter-arrested-in-ferguson\/\">Police in Ferguson have recently detained and assaulted Washington Post reporters<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Samaras of Greece, where riot police regularly beat up journalists at demonstrations, including <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/greece-riot-police-injure-woman-13-06-2014,46435.html\">injuring two journalists at a protest in June 2014<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, an organisation yet to be held to account for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/news-and-updates\/news\/no-justice-victims-nato-bombings-20090423\">deliberately bombing and killing 16 Serbian journalists in 1999<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>President Keita of Mali, where <a href=\"https:\/\/cpj.org\/2013\/05\/malian-army-expels-french-journalist-from-gao.php\">journalists are expelled for covering human rights abuses<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifah, the Foreign Minister of Bahrain, which is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpj.org\/2014\/02\/attacks-on-the-press-in-2013-bahrain.php\">world&#8217;s 2nd largest jailer of journalists<\/a> in per capita terms;<\/li>\n<li>Sheikh Mohamed Ben Hamad Ben Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2013\/10\/qatar-court-upholds-sentence-against-poet-20131021123723850815.html\">jailed a man for 15 years for writing a poem<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, who had several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpost.com\/National-News\/Palestinian-journalist-jailed-for-insulting-Abbas-308014\">journalists jailed for insulting him in 2013<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Cerar of Slovenia, which <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/slovenia-blogger-gets-six-months-in-jail-16-05-2013,44621.html\">sentenced a blogger to six months&#8217; imprisonment in 2013<\/a> for &#8220;<em>defamation<\/em>&#8220;;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Enda Kenny of Ireland, where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/ireland-making-blasphemy-an-offence-takes-04-01-2010,35672.html\">&#8220;<em>blasphemy<\/em>&#8221; is still a criminal offence<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Kopacz of Poland, which <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/poland-violating-confidentiality-of-20-06-2014,46487.html\">raided a magazine&#8217;s offices to seize recordings that might embarrass the ruling party<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>UK Prime Minister Cameron, whose security agencies <a href=\"http:\/\/en.rsf.org\/uk-government-s-culpable-20-08-2013,45073.html\">forced The Guardian to destroy hard drives containing documents it had obtained from US whistle-blower Graham Snowden threatened the paper with prosecution if it continued to report Snowden&#8217;s revelations<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Hat tip: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanielWickham93\">Daniel Wickham<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today an anti-terror rally is being held in Paris in memory of those killed at the offices of Charlie Hebdo (posts passim) and at a Kosher supermarket in recent days.
