{"id":6019,"date":"2015-05-04T06:42:07","date_gmt":"2015-05-04T06:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=6019"},"modified":"2015-05-04T06:46:40","modified_gmt":"2015-05-04T06:46:40","slug":"openwords-on-kickstarter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=6019","title":{"rendered":"Openwords on Kickstarter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/openwords.com\/\">Openwords<\/a>, the foreign language learning app for the world&#8217;s open language data the world&#8217;s under-served languages, which was reported on some weeks ago by this blog (<em>posts passim<\/em>), recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/279739136\/openwords-foreign-language-learning-app-with-open\">launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing the Kickstarter campaign has 16 days to go and aims to raise $10,000 to take the project to the next stage.<\/p>\n<h3>Foreign language learning with open data<\/h3>\n<p>There are millions of people around the world who can\u2019t learn the languages in which they\u2019re interested.<\/p>\n<p>While the learning of major languages like Chinese, Spanish and French are supported by large companies, these firms tend to ignore lesser-known languages.<\/p>\n<p>Openwords is doing things differently to solve this problem. Openwords is mining data from the public domain assets like the Wiktionary to provide educational content for all the languages, large and small.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/openwords.png\" alt=\"Openwords graphic\" width=\"600\" height=\"249\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/openwords.png 600w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/openwords-300x125.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So far Openwords has mined data for 1,000 languages.<\/p>\n<p>The Openwords app has various learning modules for vocabulary, hearing, typing, amongst others. In addition, the Openwords developers are working on simple sentence translation problems.
