{"id":6160,"date":"2015-05-29T10:32:33","date_gmt":"2015-05-29T10:32:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=6160"},"modified":"2015-05-29T11:01:20","modified_gmt":"2015-05-29T11:01:20","slug":"libreoffice-viewer-for-android-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=6160","title":{"rendered":"LibreOffice Viewer for Android released"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Document Foundation, the organisation behind <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/\">LibreOffice<\/a>, the most popular free and open source office suite, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.documentfoundation.org\/2015\/05\/28\/the-document-foundation-announces-libreoffice-viewer-for-android\/\">has announced<\/a> the release of a native application for viewing <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenDocument\"><abbr title=\"Open Document Format\">ODF<\/abbr><\/a> documents on Android devices.<\/p>\n<p>The app can be installed from the <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.documentfoundation.libreoffice\">Google Play Store<\/a>, whilst direct download of the <abbr title=\"Android application package\">APK<\/abbr> will be made available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/download\/android-viewer\">http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\/download\/android-viewer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/libre_android.jpg\" alt=\"LibreOffice Viewer screenshot\" width=\"174\" height=\"310\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/libre_android.jpg 174w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2015\/05\/libre_android-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/>LibreOffice Viewer also offers basic editing capabilities, like modifying words in existing paragraphs and changing font styles such as bold and italics.<\/p>\n<p>Editing is still an experimental feature which has to be enabled separately in the settings, and is not stable enough for mission critical tasks. Full-blown editing will be enabled in the future with<br \/>\nthe help of LibreOffice&#8217;s steadily growing developer community. The editing features provided in the current release have been developed thanks to donations to The Document Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Feedback and bug reports for the app are very welcome to help developers improve its quality en route to a fully-fledged editor. Users are invited to report problems, using the bug tracker and attaching files that have triggered the issue at <a href=\"http:\/\/documentfoundation.hosted.phplist.com\/lists\/lt.php?id=N09VVkUAB00ABgsI\">http:\/\/documentfoundation.hosted.phplist.com\/lists\/lt.php?id=N09VVkUAB00ABgsI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>LibreOffice Viewer uses the same engine as LibreOffice for Linux, OS X and Windows. This, combined with a new front-end based on Firefox for Android, reads documents similarly to a desktop version of LibreOffice.<\/p>\n<p>LibreOffice Viewer has been developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collabora.com\/\">Collabora<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.igalia.com\/\">Igalia<\/a>, backed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smoose.nl\/\">Smoose<\/a>, with contributions from <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/open-source\/soc\/\">Google Summer of Code<\/a> students, together with The Document Foundation and the LibreOffice community. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suse.com\/\">SUSE<\/a> provided a key foundation of cross-platform support, whilst the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/foundation\/moco\/\">Mozilla Corporation<\/a> &#8211; makers of Firefox- made several core components available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Document Foundation, the organisation behind LibreOffice, the most popular free and open source office suite, has announced the release of a native application for viewing ODF documents on Android devices.
