{"id":6512,"date":"2015-10-25T11:43:21","date_gmt":"2015-10-25T11:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=6512"},"modified":"2015-10-25T11:43:21","modified_gmt":"2015-10-25T11:43:21","slug":"translator-tampered-with-meeting-minutes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=6512","title":{"rendered":"Translator tampered with meeting minutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2015\/10\/football.png\" alt=\"image of a football\" width=\"150\" height=\"144\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6556\" \/>It&#8217;s been an open secret for many years that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fifa.com\/\">FIFA<\/a> &#8211; the international governing body for football &#8211; has been as reliable as a nine pound note.<\/p>\n<p>Following the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2015\/oct\/08\/sepp-blatter-suspended-fifa\">departure from its HQ building by disgraced president Sepp Blatter<\/a>, further details of malpractice in FIFA&#8217;s governance are now coming to light.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sport\/football\/article-3288073\/FIFA-translator-told-times-doctor-records-ExCo-meetings.html\">Daily Mail reported some of this fall-out<\/a> under the headline &#8220;<em>FIFA translator: I was told several times to doctor records of ExCo meetings<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mail, FIFA are investigating claims that a junior member of staff was told to falsify official records of FIFA&#8217;s meetings of its Executive Committee (ExCo) between 2001 and 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Former FIFA employee <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottjburnett\/\">Scott Burnett<\/a> first worked as a translator and then as an assistant to FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, who like Blatter, is currently suspended.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burnett dropped his bombshell via 3 tweets, as follows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottjburnett\/status\/657539201068568576\">Tweet no. 1:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I wrote the minutes of FIFA ExCo meetings from 2001 to 2010. During that period, I was instructed several times to misrepresent discussions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottjburnett\/status\/657595291349200896\">Tweet no. 2:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The instructions to misrepresent meetings came from the President&#8217;s office among others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/scottjburnett\/status\/657595818166329345\">Tweet no. 3:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I did not share this information before because I was concerned about the repercussions and I did not know who to trust within FIFA circles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We linguists &#8211; irrespective of whether we work as translators or interpreters or both &#8211; deal regularly with privileged and confidential information. This is why I rarely discuss the content of my work in public. As such, I have great sympathy for Mr Burnett since being told to falsify records must clearly have conflicted with that inbuilt sense of integrity which all linguists need to do their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Burnett is no longer employed by FIFA and currently volunteers to support grassroots football.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been an open secret for many years that FIFA &#8211; the international governing body for football &#8211; has been as reliable as a nine pound note.
