{"id":721,"date":"2012-11-29T14:06:38","date_gmt":"2012-11-29T14:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=721"},"modified":"2012-11-29T17:08:40","modified_gmt":"2012-11-29T17:08:40","slug":"introducing-vinux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=721","title":{"rendered":"Introducing Vinux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday evening I was down Bristol&#8217;s City Hall attending an event to launch Accessible Bristol (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bristolwireless.net\/2012\/11\/accessible-bristol-launched\/\">read my account of the event for Bristol Wireless<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2012\/11\/vinux-large.jpg\" alt=\"Vinux logo\" width=\"580\" height=\"209\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2012\/11\/vinux-large.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2012\/11\/vinux-large-300x108.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While there I was talking to the City Council&#8217;s Stephen Hilton and happened to mention <a href=\"http:\/\/vinuxproject.org\/\">Vinux<\/a> &#8211; Linux for the Visually Impaired &#8211; which Stephen had never heard of, despite being visually impaired himself.<\/p>\n<p>Vinux is a remastered version of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu<\/a> Linux distribution optimised for visually impaired users. It provides a screen-reader, full-screen magnification and support for Braille displays out of the box! It can be run from a Live CD on an existing machine without making any changes to your hard drive. It can also be installed to a USB pen drive or to a hard drive; as a hard drive installation this can be done either alongside Windows (dual boot) or as a complete replacement for the Hell of Gates. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>The system requirements for the main (as opposed to the command line interface) version of Linux are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 GHz x86 processor;<\/li>\n<li>1 GB of system memory (RAM);<\/li>\n<li>15 GB of hard-drive space (although this can be split onto 2 drives, a 5Gb \/ and a 10Gb \/home partition fairly easily);<\/li>\n<li>Graphics card and monitor capable of 1024 X 768 resolution;<\/li>\n<li>Either a CD\/DVD drive or a USB socket (or both);<\/li>\n<li>Internet access is helpful though not vital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vinux 3.2.1 is the current experimental release and disk images of various vintages can be downloaded from the <a href=\"http:\/\/vinuxproject.org\/downloads\">Vinux project&#8217;s downloads page<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday evening I was down Bristol&#8217;s City Hall attending an event to launch Accessible Bristol (read my account of the event for Bristol Wireless).
