{"id":7715,"date":"2017-04-26T09:57:05","date_gmt":"2017-04-26T09:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=7715"},"modified":"2017-04-26T10:08:30","modified_gmt":"2017-04-26T10:08:30","slug":"debian-to-shut-down-ftp-servers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=7715","title":{"rendered":"Debian to shut down its public FTP servers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2012\/11\/debian.png\" alt=\"Debian logo\" width=\"50\" height=\"61\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-632\" \/>Debian is a mature Linux distribution that serves as the basis for many other distros, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubuntu.com\/\">Ubuntu<\/a> family.<\/p>\n<p>Your &#8216;umble scribe has been a loyal Debian user for at least a decade and has always found it to be secure, stable and reliable operating system.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inception, Debian has offered downloads of its disk images by both the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File_Transfer_Protocol\">FTP<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hypertext_Transfer_Protocol\">HTTP<\/a> network protocols.<\/p>\n<p>However, Debian news has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.debian.org\/News\/2017\/20170425\">announced<\/a> that its public FTP service will be closed down in November 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The relevant text of the announcement is reproduced below.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After many years of serving the needs of our users, and some more of declining usage in favor of better options, all public-facing debian.org FTP services will be shut down on November 1, 2017. These are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>ftp:\/\/ftp.debian.org<\/code><\/li>\n<li><code>ftp:\/\/security.debian.org<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This decision is driven by the following considerations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>FTP servers have no support for caching or acceleration.<\/li>\n<li>Most software implementations have stagnated<br \/>\nand are awkward to use and configure.<\/li>\n<li>Usage of the FTP servers is pretty low as our own installer has not offered FTP as a way to access mirrors for over ten years.<\/li>\n<li>The protocol is inefficient and requires adding awkward kludges to firewalls and load-balancing daemons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Information for users<\/h2>\n<p>The DNS names <code>ftp.debian.org<\/code> and <code>ftp.&lt;CC&gt;.debian.org<\/code> will remain the same. The mirrors should just be accessed using HTTP instead:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>http:\/\/ftp.debian.org<\/code><\/li>\n<li><code>http:\/\/security.debian.org<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Information for developers<\/h2>\n<p>Our developer services will not be affected.
