{"id":9720,"date":"2021-05-07T10:47:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-07T10:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=9720"},"modified":"2021-05-23T10:48:42","modified_gmt":"2021-05-23T10:48:42","slug":"twitter-a-correction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=9720","title":{"rendered":"Twitter: a correction"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The media and social media today are awash with the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_Hartlepool_by-election\">yesterday&#8217;s Hartlepool by-election<\/a> which was surprisingly won from Labour by the Tories*.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, some of the language being used to describe the victory is prone to error, such as the example below from Twitter&#8217;s trending topics.<\/p>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9728\" src=\"http:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/05\/candidate.png\" alt=\"Screenshot from Twitter trends showing the Conservative MP described as an MP instead of a candidate\" width=\"485\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/05\/candidate.png 485w, https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/sites\/23\/2021\/05\/candidate-300x268.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>As the winning Tory was not the sitting MP, the correct way to describe her is as a <em>candidate<\/em>, not an <em>MP<\/em>. She only becomes an MP upon winning a parliamentary (by-)election.<\/p>\r\n<p>In times past such a basic error would have been picked by a sub-editor or similar, but they were all dispensed with some years ago. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\r\n<p><em>*= Hartlepool hasn&#8217;t had a Tory Member of Parliament since it was represented in Westminster by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peter_Mandelson\">Peter Mandelson<\/a>.<\/em> \ud83d\ude09<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The media and social media today are awash with the result of yesterday&#8217;s Hartlepool by-election which was surprisingly won from Labour by the Tories*.
