{"id":9890,"date":"2021-06-05T09:18:46","date_gmt":"2021-06-05T09:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/xislblogs.xtreamlab.net\/slwoods\/?p=9890"},"modified":"2021-06-05T09:18:46","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T09:18:46","slug":"westons-water-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.slwoods.co.uk\/?p=9890","title":{"rendered":"Weston&#8217;s water problem"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Bristol Live, formerly the Bristol (Evening) Post, aka the Temple Way Ministry of Truth, has an enduring reputation locally for the poor quality of some of its reporting.<\/p>\r\n<p>The reputation was not diminished earlier this week with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/news\/bristol-news\/popular-weston-super-mare-seafront-5491138\">report from the paper&#8217;s North Somerset correspondent<\/a> on the temporary closure for improvements of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsm-tc.gov.uk\/our-services\/water-adventure-play-park\/\">Water Adventure &amp; Play Park<\/a>, a facility managed by <a href=\"https:\/\/wsm-tc.gov.uk\/\">Weston-super-Mare Town Council<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"epyt-video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\"  style=\"display: block; margin: 0px auto;\"  id=\"_ytid_85709\"  width=\"600\" height=\"338\"  data-origwidth=\"600\" data-origheight=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YUn8tV7OVT8?enablejsapi=1&autoplay=0&cc_load_policy=0&cc_lang_pref=&iv_load_policy=1&loop=0&rel=0&fs=1&playsinline=0&autohide=2&theme=dark&color=red&controls=1&disablekb=0&\" class=\"__youtube_prefs__  no-lazyload\" title=\"Water Adventure &amp; Play Park Weston super Mare\"  allow=\"fullscreen; accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<p>The report gets off to a bad start with the headline boldly and falsely proclaiming <em>Popular Weston-super-Mare seafront water park to close this month<\/em>, making it sound as if the attraction is to close permanently, not temporarily.<\/p><p>\r\n<\/p><p>Note too the use of <em>popular<\/em>, a term normally reserved by Bristol Live for failing caf\u00e9s and restaurants.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, the real howler in the piece occurs in the obligatory quotation from a Town Council spokesperson. In his second sentence he is quoted as saying:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>We apologise for the incontinence and look forward to welcoming you back with new improvements ready for the summer holidays.<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>Whether the specified <em>incontinence<\/em> originated from any communication from the council, erroneous predictive text or any other source is unclear. Nevertheless, earlier in the piece readers are informed that &#8220;<em>the water has remained off due to covid [sic] guidelines<\/em>&#8220;, so the origin of any incontinence is unclear.<\/p>\r\n<p>When the facility reopens, we are informed that the cost of admission is \u00a32.50 per child.<\/p>\r\n<p>In view of the purported <em>incontinence<\/em>, perhaps that ought to be raised to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tena.co.uk\/women\/products\/incontinence-pants\">Tena<\/a>. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol Live, formerly the Bristol (Evening) Post, aka the Temple Way Ministry of Truth, has an enduring reputation locally for the poor quality of some of its reporting.
